Just like the coming of the seasons, one can always count on an annual film submission from writer/director Woody Allen. There’s, arguably, no one more prolific in the commercial mainstream film industry than Allen.
Allen is also coming off the financial and critical success of his modern classic Midnight in Paris. Even after all these years it seems that WoodyAllen is on top of his film making game. This latest work marks the return to the screen as an actor for Allen, albeit in a supporting role. It’s his first appearance in one of his films since his 2006 movie Scoop. Based on the trailer of To Rome with Love, this movie seems to be tapping into Woody Allen’s more silly side. Of course with Roberto Benigni in the cast, it’s hard to avoid that sort of tone. It’s great to see Academy Award winner Judy Davis back in one of Woody’s films. Also other Woody Allen film alumni’s include Alec Baldwin (Alice) and Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona). Interestingly enough, Ellen Page, Greta Gerwig and Jesse Eisenberg also appear in the film and their trademark wit and sarcasm seem to be a perfect fit for a Woody film.
In any event, I’m really looking forward to To Rome with Love. I admit that I’m a sucker for Woody Allen films. Even his misfires are better then 95% of the movies out there.
To Rome with Love is scheduled for release in New York and Los Angeles on June 22, 2012. The film stars Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, Ellen Page and Woody Allen. The film is written and directed by Woody Allen.
